Tripeptides: Effects, Research, and What You Should Know Before Buying

Tripeptides are a special class of peptides – consisting of exactly three amino acids. What are tripeptides?

A study (Ohara et al., Journal of Dermatology, 2010) investigated the effect of collagen tripeptides on skin moisture and elasticity. The results are promising, but larger, independent replication studies are required.

EFSA status: There is no approved Health Claim for collagen tripeptides according to the EU Health Claims Regulation (HCVO/EC 1924/2006). Statements such as "improves skin" or "strengthens joints" are not permitted as food supplements in Austria and throughout the EU.

  • Standard collagen hydrolysate: ~3,000–5,000 Da, well-researched (especially skin, joints), moderate price

  • No inadmissible claims: Reputable suppliers refrain from making health claims not approved by EFSA

Collagen tripeptides are a scientifically interesting further development of classic collagen peptides with potentially higher bioavailability. However, research is still in its early stages. For consumers in Austria: quality, EU conformity and realistic expectations are crucial.
