Tripeptide Collagen: What does the research say?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. In recent years, research has increasingly focused on a special form: so-called collagen tripeptide (CTP). Unlike conventional hydrolyzed collagen, CTP consists of very short peptide chains – usually only three amino acids (glycine-proline-hydroxyproline) – which can be particularly well absorbed by the body.

What is Collagen Tripeptide?

The characteristic sequence glycine-proline-hydroxyproline (Gly-Pro-Hyp) is considered one of the most common tripeptide structures in collagen and is the subject of numerous scientific investigations.

Overview of Selected Studies

Absorption and Bioavailability

A study by Iwai et al. (2005), published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, investigated the absorption of collagen peptides after oral intake. The researchers were able to demonstrate that specific collagen peptides – including Gly-Pro-Hyp – were detectable in blood plasma after ingestion. This suggests that these peptides can cross the intestinal barrier and enter the bloodstream.

Skin Research

Proksch et al. (2014) published a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study with 69 women aged 35–55 in the journal Skin Pharmacology and Physiology. After 8 weeks of collagen peptide intake, changes in skin elasticity were measured. The authors observed statistically significant differences between the collagen and placebo groups. The study was co-funded by a collagen manufacturer, which should be taken into account when evaluating the results.

Joint Cartilage Research

Clark et al. (2008) investigated the effect of hydrolyzed collagen on athletes with joint complaints in a study published in Current Medical Research and Opinion. The study included 147 participants over 24 weeks. The authors reported differences between the groups but themselves pointed out the need for further research.

Classification of the Study Situation

The current research on collagen tripeptides is promising, but still in an early stage. Important points in the evaluation:

  • Many studies have small participant numbers
  • Some of the studies are co-funded by manufacturers
  • The EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) has not yet approved any health claims for collagen
  • Further independent long-term studies are needed

Collagen tripeptide is an interesting research subject that has received increasing scientific attention in recent years. The available studies provide initial indications, which, however, need to be confirmed by further independent research. As a dietary supplement, collagen tripeptide can be part of a balanced diet.
