Which supplements in the morning, which in the evening? The big intake guide
Share
Why Timing Your Intake Matters
Many people simply take their supplements whenever they remember to – usually in the morning with breakfast. That's better than nothing, but the right timing can influence absorption and effectiveness.
Key factors include:
- Fat-soluble vs. water-soluble – fat-soluble vitamins require fat for absorption
- Interactions – some nutrients inhibit each other
- Energizing vs. relaxing – some supplements are better suited for the morning, others for the evening
- Stomach compatibility – some supplements are better tolerated with meals
⚠️ Note: All intake recommendations in this article are based on general knowledge. Approved health claims are only mentioned where they are covered by HCVO/EC No. 1924/2006.
Take in the Morning ✅
Vitamin D3 + K2

Vitamin C
Water-soluble, can be taken in the morning on an empty stomach or with breakfast. Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system and normal collagen formation.

Zinc
Best in the morning on an empty stomach or between meals – calcium and iron can inhibit absorption. Zinc contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
Midday / with Lunch 🌞

Collagen powder can be easily stirred into coffee, smoothies, or soups – with any meal. No approved HCVO claim for collagen peptides, so purely for informational purposes: It is a protein and can be flexibly integrated into daily life.

Water-soluble, can be taken in the morning or at midday. B12 contributes to the normal function of the nervous system and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
Take in the Evening 🌙
Magnesium
Magnesium in the evening – that's the classic recommendation. Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function and the normal functioning of the nervous system. Many people consciously take it in the evening, as magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

Overview Table: When to take what?

What should not be taken together?
- Zinc + Calcium – inhibit each other's absorption
- Zinc + Iron – also competition for absorption
- Magnesium + Zinc – in very high doses, they can influence each other; usually unproblematic in normal dosages
- Vitamin D3 + Vitamin K2 – this combination, however, is recommended, as they complement each other
Conclusion: Regularity beats perfect timing
The most important factor with supplements is daily, regular intake – not perfect timing down to the minute. Those who consistently take their supplements benefit more in the long run than someone who waits for the ideal moment.
Nevertheless, it's worth following a few simple rules: fat-soluble vitamins with fat, magnesium in the evening, zinc not together with calcium.
