What is Matcha?
Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder from Japan that has been used for centuries in traditional tea ceremonies. Unlike conventional green tea, with Matcha the entire leaf is consumed – which makes it particularly nutrient-rich.
Origin & History
Matcha originated in China, but was refined into an art form in Japan. Since the 12th century, it has been an integral part of Japanese tea culture and Zen tradition. The most famous cultivation areas are Uji (Kyoto), Nishio, and Kagoshima.
Quality Grades
Matcha is divided into different quality grades:
- Ceremonial Grade: Highest quality, ideal for drinking pure. Bright green, fine, and mild in taste.
- Premium Grade: Very good quality for daily enjoyment.
- Culinary Grade: Suitable for smoothies, baked goods, and lattes – intense, slightly bitter taste.
Health Benefits
Matcha is rich in antioxidants, especially EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate). Other benefits:

Preparation – Step by Step
- Sift 1–2 tsp of Matcha powder through a fine sieve into a bowl.
- Add approx. 70 ml of hot water (70–80 °C, not boiling).
- Whisk vigorously with a bamboo whisk (Chasen) in a W-motion until frothy.
- Enjoy pure or serve with frothed milk as a Matcha Latte.
