Coenzyme Q10: What's behind this endogenous active ingredient?

Coenzyme Q10 – CoQ10 for short, or also ubiquinol/ubiquinone – is a fat-soluble, vitamin-like substance found in almost every cell in the body. It is particularly known for its role in mitochondrial energy production. We explain exactly what this means and why Q10 is so popular in dietary supplements.

What is Coenzyme Q10?

Q10 is a naturally occurring coenzyme that the body can synthesize itself. It is a central component of the respiratory chain in the mitochondria – the place where cells produce their energy (ATP). In addition, Q10 acts as a fat-soluble antioxidant and helps protect cells from oxidative stress.*

Q10 is found in small amounts in foods such as meat, fish, nuts, and some vegetables. However, the body's own synthesis decreases with age.

Ubiquinone vs. Ubiquinol – what's the difference?

Q10 exists in two forms:

  • Ubiquinone is the oxidized form and the classic form in most dietary supplements.
  • Ubiquinol is the reduced, active form that the body can use directly. It is considered more bioavailable, especially in older individuals.

Our Coenzyme Q10 200 mg – 60 Softgels provides a high-dose supply in practical softgel form for optimal absorption.

Why does Q10 decrease with age?

From about the age of 30, the body's own Q10 production continuously decreases. Certain medications – especially statins (cholesterol-lowering drugs) – can also affect Q10 levels. Many people in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland therefore turn to Q10 supplements to support their daily supply.

What does research say?

The EU Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has not yet adopted any approved health claims for Q10. Nevertheless, Q10 is being investigated in numerous studies, including in connection with heart health markers, energy metabolism, and oxidative stress.

Note: Dietary supplements are not intended to diagnose, cure, mitigate, or prevent diseases. The studies mentioned serve as general scientific information.

Dosage & Intake

Studies often use dosages between 100 and 300 mg daily. Since Q10 is fat-soluble, it is recommended to take it with a fatty meal for better absorption.

Please consult a healthcare professional before taking, especially if you are taking medication (e.g., statins, blood thinners), are pregnant, or have existing medical conditions.
